Get Ready for Cycling Season with Bikes Out of Hibernation

Spring is here, and it’s time to dust off those bicycles and get ready for the cycling season. Williamsburg Area Bicyclists, in collaboration with BikeWalk Williamsburg, James City County Parks & Recreation, Jamestown Settlement, and local bicycle shops, is bringing back the popular Bikes Out of Hibernation event.

On Saturday, head over to the Jamestown Settlement parking lot between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a day of free bike checkups and other cycling-related activities. While the event focuses on safety inspections and minor adjustments, you can also benefit from tire pumping, helmet fittings, and even free helmets. It’s an opportunity for cyclists of all ages and experience levels to ensure their bikes are in top shape for the season ahead.

In addition to the bike-related festivities, there’s another exciting event happening on the same day – Pedal the Parkway. This initiative encourages the public to walk, bike, or jog along the car-free Jamestown Island loop or take a ride on the Virginia Capital Trail. Plus, since it’s the first day of National Park Week, entry to all national parks is admission-free nationwide. Just be aware that some sections of the Colonial Parkway may be closed due to ongoing renovations.

If you’re planning to attend, restrooms will be available at both the Jamestown Island Visitors Center and Jamestown Settlement Museum. Free parking can be found at the Jamestown Settlement, located at 2110 Jamestown Road, and at the visitor center on Jamestown Island.

Spring is an exciting time for the cycling industry, as people start getting their bicycles out of storage and prepare for the cycling season. With the increasing popularity of biking as a mode of transportation, as well as for recreational purposes, the industry continues to see growth and innovation.

According to market forecasts, the global bicycle market is expected to reach a value of over $75 billion by 2027. This growth can be attributed to various factors such as increasing concerns for health and fitness, rising awareness about the benefits of cycling, and the growing popularity of biking as a sustainable transportation option.

However, along with the positive trends in the industry, there are also challenges and issues that need to be addressed. One of the main concerns is the lack of infrastructure and safe cycling routes, which can discourage potential cyclists from taking up biking. Governments and organizations are working towards improving cycling infrastructure and promoting bike-friendly cities to make cycling more accessible and safer for everyone.

Another issue is the lack of awareness about bicycle safety and proper maintenance. Events like Bikes Out of Hibernation play a crucial role in educating cyclists about the importance of regular bike checkups and safety precautions. By offering free bike checkups and helmet fittings, these events ensure that cyclists are well-prepared and their bikes are in good condition for the season ahead.

The collaboration between Williamsburg Area Bicyclists, BikeWalk Williamsburg, James City County Parks & Recreation, Jamestown Settlement, and local bicycle shops showcases the collective effort of various stakeholders to promote cycling and create a supportive community for cyclists.

For those planning to attend the Bikes Out of Hibernation event, it is important to note that it is not just a one-time event, but part of a larger initiative called Pedal the Parkway. This initiative encourages people to engage in outdoor activities such as walking, biking, or jogging along car-free routes like the Jamestown Island loop or the Virginia Capital Trail. Such initiatives promote a healthy lifestyle and highlight the benefits of outdoor recreation.

As the cycling industry continues to evolve, it is important for cyclists and enthusiasts to stay updated on the latest trends, safety guidelines, and events happening in their area. Websites like wabonline.org provide valuable information about upcoming events, cycling resources, and community initiatives.
