Encinitas has bid farewell to an electric bike rental company after it struggled to achieve the desired usage rates. BCycle, a subsidiary of Trek Bicycle Co., launched its rentable e-bike program in early 2022 but has announced its departure from the city this month. Despite recording 5,500 unique riders since its inception and an estimated total distance of 123,000 miles covered by users, the program did not generate the expected level of profitability.

BCycle had placed 75 rentable e-bikes across 22 docking stations in various parts of Encinitas. While locations along Coast Highway 101 saw moderate popularity, the lowest usage spots were in the city’s mid-section, including a site at the Senior & Community Center. Conger noted that despite having a few dedicated bike renters, the mid-section locations did not attract significant usage.
Encinitas was BCycle’s 11th location where it directly owned the bikes and operated the rental system. The company also sells its bikes to rental systems in other cities, including the Los Angeles Metro system.
Although the e-bike rental program did not thrive in Encinitas, it remains to be seen if future initiatives will find success in the city or if alternative transportation solutions will gain popularity among residents and visitors.
