The Neptune Beach Police Department has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of residents who ride both electric bikes and regular bikes by erecting signs that remind them to obey traffic laws. This initiative is in response to concerns raised by local residents about the risky behavior exhibited by some bike riders.
Rosemary Naughton, a resident of First Street, expressed her concern about the high speeds at which people ride their e-bikes, stating that it poses a potentially dangerous situation. Kierstyn Jennings, another resident, shared a similar experience of narrowly avoiding a collision while walking. Both residents agree that bike riders should be required to adhere to traffic laws, especially considering that e-bikes are equipped with motors.
To address these concerns, the NBPD has installed signs that serve as reminders for bike riders to obey all traffic laws and not exceed a speed of 15 mph. This initiative follows several traffic enforcement campaigns conducted by the police department on First Street to curb dangerous practices involving e-bikes. In fact, an arrest report highlighted a case where a man was apprehended for reckless driving and disorderly intoxication after colliding with a woman while riding an e-bike.
Although residents appreciate the city’s efforts to raise awareness of traffic laws, they feel that the signs could be more conspicuous. Suggestions have been made to use a different color, increase the size of the signs, or attach blinking lights to them.
The main concern raised by residents is the disregard for stop signs, with Naughton emphasizing the potential for serious injuries if this behavior persists. However, Jennings commended the city for holding people accountable and creating awareness about the importance of following traffic laws.
The NBPD has also utilized social media platforms to share information about the signs and remind bike riders of their obligation to comply with traffic laws. Violators may be subject to a fine of $62.50.
Overall, the Neptune Beach Police Department’s efforts aim to create a safer environment for both bike riders and pedestrians, ensuring that everyone can freely enjoy the streets without the fear of accidents or injuries.
