A recent incident in Brooklyn has once again shed light on the dangers of exploding e-bike batteries. The Brooklyn Fire Department confirmed that a fire, which destroyed two storefront businesses and two apartments, was caused by an e-bike battery that exploded while it was being charged.

The fire, which occurred in Midwood at around 7 a.m., left a 30-year-old man critically injured. He suffered extensive burns and smoke inhalation and is currently recovering at a burn unit in Staten Island. Three other individuals were treated for minor injuries and released.

According to FDNY Fire Marshal Daniel Flynn, the charred e-bike was found in the “area of origin” of the fire. The bike had been placed at the foot of the stairs leading to the apartments when it exploded, sparking the massive blaze and hindering rescue efforts.

This incident is not an isolated case. In fact, e-bike batteries have been responsible for numerous fires and injuries in New York City. In the same month, a fire in the Bronx caused by a lithium-ion battery-powered e-bike left 10 people injured and displaced 26 residents. Another incident in Harlem resulted in the death of a Columbia Journalism School graduate and injured 17 others.

The problem lies with after-market batteries that users buy online or in scooter stores as supplements or replacements for the original battery. These batteries are often not built to the same safety standards as factory-installed ones and pose a greater risk of combustion.

To prevent such incidents, the Fire Department advises e-bike and scooter owners to never charge their batteries unattended and to charge them outdoors. Nationwide, charging lithium-ion batteries for devices like scooters and e-bikes has caused over 330 fires from 2015 to 2018, resulting in millions of dollars in property damage.

It is essential for manufacturers and retailers to prioritize safety and educate consumers about the risks associated with substandard batteries. Additionally, individuals who own e-bikes or scooters should use caution and follow safety guidelines to prevent devastating fires and injuries.
