Introduction
Gas-powered motorcycles have long dominated the off-road endurance racing world, but with advancements in electric bike technology, a new player may be emerging. The Surron Storm Bee, originally designed as a trail bike, has caught the attention of the KC Powersports crew in San Juan Capistrano, California. They saw the potential for the Storm Bee to compete in the 3 Bros Racing 24-Hour Endurance Race held at Glen Helen Raceway in California. With the support of Surron’s CEO, they embarked on a mission to prove that electric bikes could hold their own against their gas-powered counterparts.
The Surron Storm Bee
The Surron Storm Bee is unlike other electric models offered by Surron. While models like the Light Bee and Ultra Bee are popular among younger riders in local neighborhoods, the Storm Bee shares more similarities with gas-powered off-road motorcycles on the market. Recognizing the Storm Bee’s potential, the KC Powersports crew approached Surron with the idea of racing it in the 24-hour endurance event, gaining the CEO’s enthusiastic support.
The Challenges
One of the major challenges the KC Powersports team faced was ensuring a continuous power supply for the Storm Bee throughout the 24-hour race. Unlike gas-powered motorcycles where riders simply refuel at a gas station, the team had to strategize battery changes and recharging amid limited access to electricity. The team utilized six stock batteries in rotation, changing one every lap around the racecourse, which took approximately 30 minutes to complete. The removed batteries were immediately placed on chargers to ensure they were ready for the next change.
The Modifications
To enhance the Storm Bee’s performance, the KC Powersports team enlisted the help of AHM Factory Services to rework its suspension components. The stock shock was overpowering the fork, causing instability in the front end. AHM adjusted the shock’s spring rates and re-valved it internally to create a more connected feel. They also improved the front suspension by adding a mid-valve circuit and increasing preload, resulting in better balance and overall performance.
The Race
Equipped with the modified Storm Bee, the KC Powersports team embarked on the 24-hour endurance race at Glen Helen. Despite the challenges of battery changes and recharging, they successfully completed the race, showcasing the potential of electric bikes in the off-road racing world.
The Future
The success of the Surron Storm Bee in the 24-hour race opens up exciting possibilities for the sport. With further advancements in electric bike technology, we may witness a Surron electric motorcycle on the top step of the 24-Hour Endurance Race podium in the future. The KC Powersports team’s dedication and innovative approach have brought electric bikes one step closer to challenging the dominance of their gas-powered counterparts.
New Product: EVS Flex Lite Elbow Guards
In addition to the groundbreaking performance of the Surron Storm Bee, we are excited to introduce the new EVS Flex Lite Elbow Guards. These guards utilize EVS’s Reactive Memory Foam (RMF) Technology, providing soft and pliable protection that stiffens upon impact. The compression sleeve design ensures a comfortable and secure fit, while the Trac-Grip technology with silicone grippers prevents the guards from moving during intense off-road rides. With the Flex Lite Elbow Guards, you can enjoy lightweight and flexible protection without compromising comfort.
Industry Overview
The off-road endurance racing industry has traditionally been dominated by gas-powered motorcycles. However, with advancements in electric bike technology, there is growing interest in the potential of electric bikes in this sector. The Surron Storm Bee, a trail bike designed by Surron, has caught the attention of industry experts and enthusiasts due to its performance capabilities.
Market Forecasts
The growing interest in electric bikes for off-road racing has led to positive market forecasts for this segment. According to industry experts, the electric off-road motorcycle market is expected to experience significant growth in the coming years. Factors such as environmental concerns, technological advancements, and the increasing popularity of electric vehicles are driving this growth. Market analysts predict that electric bikes will capture a significant market share in the off-road racing industry in the near future.
Industry Challenges
While electric bikes show promise in off-road racing, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. One of the major challenges is ensuring a continuous power supply for electric bikes during endurance races. Unlike gas-powered motorcycles that can easily refuel at gas stations, electric bikes require battery changes and recharging. Limited access to electricity in race settings can pose a significant challenge for teams.
Advancements in Technology
To address the challenges faced by electric bikes in endurance races, teams and manufacturers are constantly working on advancements in technology. Battery technology is a key focus area, with efforts being made to increase battery capacity, improve charging speeds, and optimize energy efficiency. Suspension components are also being reworked to enhance the performance and stability of electric bikes in off-road racing situations.
