The state of Massachusetts is taking steps to support low-income families in need of transportation by introducing rebates for the purchase of e-bikes. The Massachusetts Clean Energy Technology Center (MassCEC) has issued a “Request for Proposals” to find a suitable business experienced in clean transportation to run the statewide e-bike program. To address the issue of high costs associated with e-bikes, the program will offer rebates to low and middle-income households. Low-income households earning less than 225 percent of the federal poverty line can receive up to $1,200 in rebates or up to 90 percent of the total costs. Moderate-income households earning less than 400 percent of the federal poverty line can receive up to $800 in rebates or up to 75 percent of the total costs. Additionally, families will have access to an extra $150 to purchase helmets, lights, and locks for their e-bikes.
To ensure compliance with the state’s standards, e-bikes must only be purchased at participating Massachusetts stores. Applicants will be notified of acceptance and will have 60 days to make their purchase. The program is expected to roll out across the state, with approximately 13 percent of the population in western Massachusetts eligible for rebates.
