DJI Enters the Electric Bike Market with Avinox Drive System

DJI, known for its popular drones, is shifting its focus to products that won’t be affected by potential US drone bans. One such product is the Avinox Drive System, marking DJI’s entry into the e-bike arena. With competitors like Bosch, Bafang, Shimano, and SRAM, DJI aims to make a mark in this rapidly growing market.

The Avinox Drive System boasts a lightweight design, weighing in at just 2.52 kg (5.6 pounds) and 5.39 kg including the batteries. Despite its lightness, it offers impressive peak torque/power of up to 105Nm (850W). The system also provides two battery options of 600Wh or 800Wh, with the latter being capable of rapid charging, reaching 75 percent in just 1.5 hours thanks to GaN 3x fast charging technology.

DJI’s Avinox system differentiates itself with a blend of size, weight, and power output, providing riders with a quiet and smooth ride. It includes four standard riding assist modes: Auto, Eco, Trail, and Turbo, with an additional Boost mode for extra power when needed. The Auto mode utilizes “multi-sensor fusion” technology to continuously adjust assistance based on riding resistance.

A two-inch OLED full-color touchscreen display allows riders to control the assist modes and access essential information. The system also offers smartphone connectivity, enabling features like security, data recording, sharing, and real-time bike status/location. Riders can customize assist levels and parameters through the accompanying app.

DJI’s Avinox Drive System will be exclusively available to manufacturers, while the first e-bike to feature this system will be the Amflow PL. Targeted at electric mountain bike enthusiasts, the Amflow PL weighs in at 19.2kg (42 pounds) and boasts advanced features such as a four-bar linkage structure, cutting-edge geometry, a co-tuned rear shock with FOX, and an SRAM rear derailleur.

Although DJI faces the potential ban of its drones in the US, the company remains focused on expanding its product portfolio. DJI believes that the ban, currently under review by the Senate, would negatively impact not only their business but also the broader ecosystem of operators, businesses, and public safety agencies that rely on their technologies.

While no retail price is available for the Avinox Drive System, the Amflow eMTB is set to be priced between €7,000 and €12,000 ($7,500 and $12,850) in Europe. The release of the Amflow eMTB is scheduled for Q4 2024 and will be made available through authorized dealers in Germany, the UK, Australia, and other locations.
