Arriva to Lead Electric Bus Initiative in Budapest

Arriva has announced a significant advancement in sustainable transportation for Budapest, winning a contract to operate the city’s first electric bus fleet. This achievement follows the signing of two 12-year contracts with the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) during a formal event on October 3, 2024.

The ambitious plan will see the introduction of 82 fully electric buses, expected to enter service by the end of 2025, with an additional 21 buses as a contingency. The buses are to be supplied by BYD, renowned for its innovative blade battery technology, marking a major deployment of these new-energy vehicles.

Effective from 2026 through to 2038, these contracts will replace Arriva’s earlier agreements in the Budapest region. To support this initiative, Arriva has invested in the electrification of its Andor depot, which can accommodate a fleet of approximately 150 buses.

The upcoming electric fleet will consist of 58 standard buses and 24 articulated versions, designed with low floors and advanced driver features like digital mirrors and heated seats. Arriva’s newly established Zero Emission Institute (ZEI) will provide critical expertise and support for the project, helping to meet Budapest’s infrastructure needs.

Arriva currently operates one of the youngest fleets in Hungary, with around 450 modern vehicles. The Managing Director of Arriva Group for Mainland Europe expressed pride in this development, emphasizing the company’s commitment to a sustainable future and solidifying its position as the leading private bus operator in the city.
