Ten Injured in Marble Hill Fire: Lithium-Ion Battery Determined as Cause

A residential fire in Marble Hill resulted in ten individuals sustaining non life-threatening injuries. The fire broke out at a multiple dwelling located at 36 Marble Hill Avenue and West 255 Street, which prompted a response from 138 firefighters and EMS personnel.

The fire quickly escalated to three alarms, creating severe fire conditions on all floors and in a stairwell of the building. Firefighters were observed battling the blaze from the roof of the structure. Thankfully, all ten injuries were determined to be non life-threatening, with six firefighters and four civilians affected.

After more than an hour of intense efforts, the fire was ultimately brought under control. It was later determined that a lithium-ion battery was the cause of the fire. This incident emphasizes the potential fire hazards associated with these increasingly prevalent energy storage devices.

Within the past few weeks, there have been reports of other fire incidents in the Bronx. In Norwood, a fire on Tyron Avenue resulted in two individuals being transported to the hospital. Additionally, a fire in Kingsbridge claimed the lives of five cats and injured two people. It is imperative to take precautions to ensure the safety of both humans and their pets in the event of a fire.

The American Red Cross recommends keeping pets near entrances when away from home, with collars and leashes readily available for rescue purposes. For those who leave their pets home alone, it is advisable to confine them to areas or rooms near entrances, making it easier for firefighters to locate them. Affixing a pet alert window cling and maintaining an updated count of pets in the home can also assist rescuers.

Fire safety training sessions are being conducted across the Bronx in collaboration with the FDNY. Valuable home fire safety tips can be found on the FDNY Smart website. Stay informed and prepared to prevent fire incidents and protect the well-being of both humans and pets.
