The Peru Police Department has taken a novel approach to bolster community engagement and accessibility by introducing a fleet of e-bikes for downtown patrols. These electric bicycles, equipped with lights and sirens, have quickly become vital assets for officers on the beat.
One incident underscored the efficacy of the e-bikes when officers apprehended an individual smoking fentanyl, resulting in the immediate confiscation of the illicit substance. Since their implementation in late March, the e-bikes have also been deployed for traffic stops and providing medical aid. Notably, an officer on an e-bike recently played a pivotal role in responding to a heart attack, expertly administering CPR and effectively saving the person’s life.
Beyond their practical usage, these e-bikes have become conversation starters within the local community. Officer Richard Steidell, a passionate cyclist, shares, “The public absolutely loves it. I lose count of how many people stop to say hi and check out the bike.” This positive interaction not only establishes a welcoming environment but also helps officers forge stronger bonds with the residents they serve.
With their versatile design, costing around $8,000 per unit, these e-bikes effortlessly navigate both city streets and mountain trails. Boasting an electric charge lasting a minimum of 10 hours, officers can fully rely on them for an entire shift. Additionally, the bikes are equipped with Narcan and Automated External Defibrillators, allowing officers to respond promptly to instances of drug overdoses and cardiac emergencies.
Most notably, the e-bikes grant officers increased mobility, enabling them to swiftly and efficiently reach various locations. Officer Steidell emphasizes the advantages, stating, “Riding the bike at work is a lot of fun. It boosts morale, and you get to interact with everyone. Being on a bike makes you more approachable than sitting in a patrol car with the windows up.”
Overall, the introduction of e-bike patrols in Peru exhibits a pragmatic and community-focused approach to law enforcement. By bridging the gap between officers and residents, these e-bikes contribute to creating a safer and more connected city.
