A recent city inspection at Wilson’s E Bike Shop in Forest Hills has uncovered some alarming violations that could have had catastrophic consequences. The inspection, carried out by the city’s Lithium-ion Battery Task force, revealed that the shop was building battery packs with individual lithium-ion cells and replacing old ones, all in violation of the fire code.
FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the work carried out by the task force during the inspection literally saved lives. During the inspection, approximately 60 battery packs, hundreds of individual lithium-ion cells, 25 e-scooters, and 25 combination electric-and-gas mopeds were found. The NYPD also had to remove seven scooters that exceeded the city’s speed limit of 20 miles per hour. These findings highlight the magnitude of the violations at Wilson’s E Bike Shop.
The Bureau of Fire Prevention issued several violations, including storing more than five batteries and sorting and repairing batteries. Additionally, summonses were issued for repairing batteries, having untagged fire extinguishers, electrical hazards, obstruction of egress, storing gasoline and diesel fuel, and obstructing government authority by attempting to remove and hide batteries.
