DJI, the renowned manufacturer known for its drones and camera equipment, has made another surprising move by entering the e-bike market. Introducing their latest innovation, the Avinox drivetrain, DJI aims to compete with well-established e-bike brands like Bosch, Fazua, TQ, and Bafang.
The Avinox drivetrain comes with a mid-mounted motor, which many experts consider to be the optimal configuration for e-bikes. DJI has designed the motor to be lightweight, weighing only 2.52 kg (5.55 lbs), making it lighter than Bosch’s Performance Line CX but slightly heavier than TQ’s HPR50. One notable feature of the motor is the use of polymer gears, which not only reduces weight but also suppresses noise. However, only time will tell if these gears can withstand the rigors of real-world riding.
In terms of power, the Avinox drivetrain boasts a nominal rating of 250 W, with a peak power output of 850 W. This impressive peak power allows the motor to generate a torque of 105 Nm (77 lb-ft), surpassing the capabilities of Bosch’s CX and even doubling that of the HPR50. Additionally, the Avinox drivetrain offers several assist modes, including an exciting Boost mode that provides a peak torque of 120 Nm (88.5 lb-ft) and 1,000 W of power for 30 seconds.
To complement the Avinox drivetrain, DJI has developed two battery options: 600 Wh and 800 Wh. These batteries offer a peak range of 117 km (73 mi) and 157 km (97.5 mi) respectively, under ideal conditions. The recharging capabilities are also impressive, with the 800 Wh battery able to go from 0% to 75% in just 1.5 hours, allowing riders to quickly recharge during a lunch break.
Keeping track of ride data and battery levels is made convenient through a 2-inch OLED interactive display mounted on the top tube of the e-bike. This dust-proof, water-resistant, and antiglare display provides accurate information collected from nearly 50 data points. Control of the display can be done using a handlebar-mounted controller, eliminating the need for a smartphone.
While DJI’s Avinox drivetrain and e-bikes, known as Amflow, are currently only available in the UK, Germany, and Australia, their entry into the e-bike market has generated significant interest. With its lightweight motor, powerful performance, and innovative features, DJI is poised to make a splash in the e-bike industry, and it won’t be long before other countries join in on the excitement.
The e-bike industry has been steadily growing in recent years, with more and more people opting for electric bikes as a convenient and eco-friendly mode of transportation. According to market forecasts, the global e-bike market is expected to reach a value of $46.04 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 7.9%.
One of the key drivers of this growth is the increasing demand for sustainable transportation options. E-bikes provide a greener alternative to traditional bicycles and cars, with zero emissions and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. As governments and individuals become more conscious of environmental issues, the popularity of e-bikes continues to rise.
In addition to environmental concerns, factors such as urbanization, congested roads, and the need for efficient and affordable transportation have also contributed to the surge in e-bike sales. E-bikes offer a practical solution for commuting in crowded cities, providing a faster and easier way to navigate through traffic.
However, despite the advantages of e-bikes, there are still some challenges facing the industry. One major issue is the price of e-bikes, which can be significantly higher than traditional bicycles. This can deter some potential buyers who may find it difficult to justify the investment. Efforts are being made to reduce costs and make e-bikes more accessible to a wider range of consumers.
Another challenge is the lack of infrastructure and regulations specific to e-bikes. As the popularity of e-bikes grows, governments and local authorities need to adapt by implementing appropriate policies and infrastructure to ensure the safety and integration of e-bikes into existing transportation networks.
Overall, the entry of DJI into the e-bike market with their Avinox drivetrain and Amflow e-bikes is a significant development. Given DJI’s reputation for innovation and quality in the drone industry, their entrance into the e-bike market is likely to shake up the competition and further fuel the growth of this industry.
