New York City Officials are persisting with their bold plan to transform a decommissioned newsstand near City Hall into a state-of-the-art delivery hub for e-bike workers. Despite facing opposition from the local community board, the Landmark Preservation Committee convened on Tuesday to determine the fate of the project. The proposal involves renovating the kiosk with a modern design and installing charging stations capable of accommodating up to 48 batteries for electric bicycles. To access the hub, delivery workers will be able to use a dedicated app, with Oonee, a company experienced in managing bike parking facilities across the city, operating the charging infrastructure.
If the Landmark Preservation Commission approves the proposed design without any modifications, construction on the new hub could begin within five months and aims to be fully operational by late fall. This latest meeting comes after Manhattan Community Board 1 previously voted against the project on non-binding grounds, expressing concerns about the project’s aesthetic compatibility with the area’s historical character. Despite the newsstand’s elaborate vintage roof and columns, it does not hold landmark status according to the Landmark Preservation Commission, as it was constructed in the 1980s.
In response to community feedback, Ligia Guallpa, the executive director of the Worker’s Justice Project, stressed the importance of collaboration and community engagement during the development process. She emphasized the organization’s commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that the delivery hub meets the community’s needs while addressing concerns.
The initiative to establish safe charging locations for delivery workers arose from a series of fires caused by the lithium-ion batteries commonly used in e-bikes. U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer has pledged a $1 million grant in 2022 to support the conversion of the City Hall newsstand. Fantastica, the construction company responsible for the project, has revealed renderings displaying a transformed 300-square-foot space that will provide a welcoming environment for delivery workers. This concept of a “mobility hub” is not exclusive to New York, as cities across the nation are exploring similar service amenities in response to the micro-mobility revolution.
