Duarte City Council Votes to Extend Local Transit Service

The Duarte City Council recently reached a unanimous decision to continue the DuartEBus service provided by Foothill Transit for an additional three years. This local transit option currently connects significant landmarks within the community, such as Encanto Park and the City of Hope medical campus, while also serving the residential areas nearby. The service is utilized by approximately 2,100 passengers each month.

First launched in 2019 with two distinct routes, the service underwent changes that streamlined it into the existing Route 861 in 2023. This consolidation has led to remarkable savings for the city, estimated at $22,000 monthly and potentially up to $250,000 annually. Funding for the service will remain secured through the end of the 2024/25 fiscal year with the help of allocated funds from Propositions A and C.

Assistant City Manager Kristen Petersen is currently exploring possibilities for enhancing the existing service, including the potential addition of a limited hour, on-demand MicroTransit option. However, given its projected costs, this extension may not be feasible.

Councilmember Samuel Kang raised inquiries regarding future expansions of the DuartEBus route and the need for newer, smaller buses. While the focus remains on efficient transport to major regional lines, the current aging fleet of Proterra electric buses has raised concerns about reliability. Solutions for future technology upgrades, including potential hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, are being considered as part of the ongoing transit planning.

Enhancing Your Transit Experience: Tips, Life Hacks, and Interesting Facts

As public transit services like the DuartEBus continue to evolve, it’s essential to make the most of your transportation options. Here are some valuable tips, life hacks, and intriguing facts that can enhance your experience on local transit systems.

1. Plan Your Routes in Advance
One of the best ways to ensure a smooth transit experience is to plan your trip ahead of time. Utilize transit apps or online route planners provided by local transit authorities to check schedules and map out your routes. Knowing the timing and transfer points can help you avoid unnecessary delays.

2. Explore Alternative Stops
If your destination has multiple stops, consider exploring the less popular ones. These stops often have lower congestion, making it easier to find a seat and exit the bus. You might also stumble upon local shops or attractions that you wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.

3. Take Advantage of Discounts and Passes
Many transit systems offer discounted fares for students, seniors, and frequent riders. Check to see if the DuartEBus or your local service provides any passes that can save you money in the long run. Bulk purchasing options could be beneficial if you use transit regularly.

4. Pack Smart
When you’re commuting via public transport, especially on buses like the DuartEBus, pack your belongings wisely. Use a backpack or tote that can easily fit under the seat to keep your hands free. Additionally, bring along snacks and a water bottle to keep your energy up while you travel.

5. Stay Connected
Most bus services now offer real-time tracking through their apps. Make sure to stay connected to get live updates on the bus schedules and delays. This feature can prevent unnecessary wait times and help you keep track of your commute.

6. Respect Public Transit Etiquette
Always be courteous to other passengers. Give up your seat to those in need, keep noise to a minimum, and avoid blocking the aisles with large bags. A pleasant environment can enhance the commuting experience for everyone.

7. Keep an Eye on Service Updates
Local transit services sometimes undergo changes in routes or schedules. Stay updated by following your local transit authority’s website or social media for announcements regarding service improvements, like the potential limited hour, on-demand MicroTransit option the DuartEBus is considering.

8. Discover the Facts About Public Transit
Did you know that public transit helps reduce traffic congestion and lowers pollution levels? In cities across the U.S., every public transit vehicle can replace up to 52 cars on the road. Utilizing public transportation not only saves you money but also contributes to a cleaner environment.

With the continued improvement of transit services like the DuartEBus, passengers have an opportunity not only to commute efficiently but also to enjoy the ride while contributing to sustainable practices.
